Denise Peach

Denise has had a varied career working in both Public and Private sector and volunteering as a Trustee or Chair for a number of Charities. Her career path included West Midlands Police, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce’s, various hospitals and prisons as well as becoming a consultant for a number of large Education organisations. In 2007 Denise started her own training company providing both Government funded and commercial training. Her company was initially offered a £120K contract and since then the business has grown in size and now to over £2.5m and employees 60 staff. Denise has undertaken a number of qualifications including a degree in Police Studies and achieved a BA Hons which also included management as well as the British constitution. She also has a number of qualifications that include management level 7, Certificate in Further Education, I.A.G, Trainer’s award, assessor award, internal qualification award, as well as safe guarding. In her spare time Denise spends time working with charities in the position of either as a Chair or Trustee. At present Denise is a chair of a local charity who helps young people to gain skills to help them gain work in the construction as well as help with personal issues. Blackwell and Eyam is a local community transport charity in Derbyshire and Denise was initially acting as chair and in 2023 she agreed to take on the post of Chair. Denise is also a trustee for a community project charity which the work they undertake is supporting small groups within the Birmingham area.

Eleanor Barton

Eleanor has been an active member of the Aston Students’ Union since 2018, throughout her biomedical engineering undergraduate degree she had positions on sports club and society committees as well as being a student representative. She looks forward to continuing to support the Students’ Union during her PhD, in the role of Student Trustee.

Ananya Gupta

Ananya is a 2nd year Business Computing and IT student. Ananya has been involved with SU through her student experience as a the Strategic Event Coordinator for Aston Women in Business Society. Ananya is committed to bringing her student perspective and making sure voice of the students are heard at the Trustee Board. Ananya will be embarkng on a placement year with Siemens as a Business IT Intern where she aims to further develop her skills and contribute to the wider community.

Arun Shoker

External Trustee

Arun works as a Mentoring Programme Coordinator at The Diana Award, he coordinates the delivery of a 12-week mentoring programme to secondary schools all across the Birmingham region. Arun previously worked at Aston University as part of the AimHigher team

Anton Schwarz

Alumni Trustee

Learn More

Anton was President of the Students’ Union in 1978. He has some great memories of the SU and is keen to support the SU in his role of Alumni Trustee. After graduating from Aston in the late 70s, he and his best friend set Laser Expertise Ltd – a Fabrication and Laser Cutting business in Nottingham, which he remains the Managing Director of today.

Lee Marsham

External Trustee

Lee currently works for an housing association but has previously worked in the SU sector. Lee has worked on some high profile projects such as HS2 and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and has great knowledge of the local area due to being from Birmingham. Lee is also a serving Councillor on Birmingham City Council, where he is the Chair of the Sustainability and Transport Overview & Scrutiny Committee and a Member and former Vice Chair of the Planning Committee.

Callum Roberts

External Trustee

Callum has worked in HE for 9 years since leaving University in 2012. Originally specialising in Sports Development, he has since gained managerial qualifications and taken on a leadership role at the University of Buckingham as the Sport & Students' Union Manager. He is strong believer in partnership working and has established a strong network of Town and Gown relationships at his institution. In the last three years he has developed the student voice on campus significantly, introducing Sabbatical Officers for the first time in the Union's history and bringing the academic representative system under the supervision of the Union. Recently he was also elected as the Professional Services Representative on Council for the University of Buckingham.

Callum is excited to learn more about the work of Aston Students' Union and will not be afraid to challenge the staff and officers to ensure that students are getting the best possible experience and support from their Union.

Wayne Smith

In-coming External Trustee

Wayne retired in 2021 as Director of IT & Information Security at Birmingham Airport Limited after a distinguished career in IT and Information Security. He managed over 174 systems crucial for the airport's operations and played a key role in the rollout of Windows 95. He represented European airports on an EU cyber security working group and served as Vice Chair of the Airport Council International Cyber Security Committee. Wayne was appointed as a member of the ececutive committee for the European Strategic Coordination Platform. Wayne holds a master’s degree from York University, is PRINCE2 accredited, ITIL certified, and qualified in GDPR. His career advanced from programming to IT support, business analysis, project management, and director roles. Recognized by the British Computer Society, he is a Chartered IT Professional and Fellow, and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists. In retirement, Wayne remains active as a non-executive director and trustee for several organizations, volunteers in local schools, and mentors transitioning soldiers.
