An Emergency Union Council took place on Monday, 20th May for students to vote on two motions that were submitted by our student members.
On Monday, 20th May, from 4 pm to 6 pm, Aston Students' Union held an Emergency Union Council in response to two motions being submitted by student members.
There were 450 individual voters and a total of 852 votes.
The first motion submitted by student members was titled "Demonstrating Solidarity with Palestinian Students".
There was a total of 450 votes which included:
- 443 votes for ‘Yes’
- 5 votes for ‘No’
- 2 votes for ‘Abstain’
The choice with 50% or more votes would determine the outcome of the motion. Therefore, choice ‘yes’ received the majority votes for this motion.
Following the voting period the motion has passed. More information on this vote and the subsequent course of action following the passing of the motion will be communicated over the coming days.
The second motion submitted by student members was titled "Proposal for Reform of Officer Titles and Role Remits".
There was a total of 402 votes which included:
- 322 votes for ‘Yes’
- 17 votes for ‘No’
- 63 votes for ‘Abstain’
The choice with 50% or more votes would determine the outcome of the motion. Therefore, choice ‘yes’ received the majority votes for this motion.
Following the voting period the motion has passed. In accordance to ASU Byelaw 243 “A change to the Bye Laws is a joint process of Union Council and the Trustees in accordance with Article 61. For the avoidance of doubt, a change to the Bye Laws may be proposed by a motion at Union Council.” The Students’ Union Trustee Board will now ratify the decision.
